The European Heart Network (EHN) paper on cardiovascular risk assessment reviews the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of programmes aimed at identifying people at high risk of developing and dying prematurely from CVD. EHN recommends that the European Commission, as part of a comprehensive EU strategy on cardiovascular diseases, makes a proposal for an EU recommendation on national cardiovascular risk-assessment programmes to be implemented by the EU Member States.

The European Heart Network, together with the European Society of Cardiology call for a centralised, comprehensive European cardiovascular diseases registry to ensure effective service planning and quality of care for patients across the EU. This would provide an important and effective tool for a patient-centred health care in the future.

EHN position on the Commission proposal on consumer information on food products

Every year over 1.9 million people die from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in the European Union. Over 180 000 deaths from CVD are caused by smoking. In order to reduce effectively the risk of CVD from the use of tobacco and nicotine products, such use must be eliminated completely.

To eliminate the use of tobacco products, EHN believes that first and foremost the EU and all European countries need to establish comprehensive tobacco control strategies including high taxes, comprehensive bans on direct and indirect advertising of tobacco, smoking bans in public and workplaces (including restaurants and bars), strong warnings on labels (including pictorial warnings).
